چکیده

[1] Precipitation in north-central (subtropical) Chile has been declining over the last 130 years. This is of concern in a region where precipitation is already low and which hosts considerable economic activity and a large population. Interannual variability of precipitation is primarily controlled by ENSO, but the reasons for the increasing aridity have remained elusive. Here we show that the negative trend in precipitation is not related to tropical Pacific forcing and that recent El Niño activity instead helped to alleviate the worst drought conditions. Based on data from 1979–2004 we further show that sea surface temperatures and sea-ice concentration in the Amundsen Sea and associated blocking activity in the Bellingshausen Sea are related to winter precipitation in subtropical Chile, independently of ENSO. High latitude forcing from the Amundsen Sea region may provide an alternative explanation for the observed secular drying trend. Citation: Vuille, M., and J.-P. Mid-Holocene climates of the Americas: a dynamical response to changed seasonality

Simulations of the climatic response to midHolocene (6 ka BP) orbital forcing with two coupled ocean–atmosphere models (FOAM and CSM) show enhancement of monsoonal precipitation in parts of the American Southwest, Central America and northernmost South America during Northern Hemisphere summer. The enhanced onshore flow that brings precipitation into Central America is caused by a northward dis...

The coastal winds off western subtropical South America in future climate scenarios

The west coast of subtropical South America is characterized by a semi-arid climate and very persistent southerly winds that often exhibit a low-level jet structure. The nearly alongshore flow forces coastal and offshore upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich waters, thus supporting one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world and a wealth of fishery resources. Therefore, the evaluation ...

Southern limits of distribution of the intertidal gobies Chaenogobius annularis and C. gulosus support the existence of a biogeographic boundary in southern Japan (Teleostei, Perciformes, Gobiidae)

Understanding the distributional patterns of individual animal groups with respect to coastal topology and the local physical environment provides essential foundational frameworks for marine zoogeography. In the northwestern Pacific waters of Japan, the distributional pattern of some cool-temperate species of marine fishes suggests the existence of a biogeographic boundary corresponding to a l...

Eastern South African hydroclimate over the past 270,000 years

Processes that control the hydrological balance in eastern South Africa on orbital to millennial timescales remain poorly understood because proxy records documenting its variability at high resolution are scarce. In this work, we present a detailed 270,000 year-long record of terrestrial climate variability in the KwaZulu-Natal province based on elemental ratios of Fe/K from the southwest Indi...
